August Schwer is one of the most well known and respected German Cuckoo Clock Manufacturers around. Nestled in the Black Forest in Germany, August Schwer has been producing quality, hand made cuckoo clocks since 1885. Based out of Schoenwald, Germany, their clock makers specialize in traditional, hand carved and chalet-style cuckoo clocks.
Traditional, High Quality Standards and the VdS Certification
August Schwer was ran as a family business until 2000, when one of their own employees bought the company. They have always, and still do, maintain a consistently high standard of craftsmanship, and each of their cuckoo clocks is VdS certified by the Black Forest Clock Association. That VdS certification is important to many people as it signifies that the clock was produced in the traditional fashion and with specific, traditional components and designs. There are no big factories or robotic machinery making VdS cuckoo clocks, but rather skilled craftsmen who’ve perfected hand made cuckoo clocks. In addition to their small workshop, they have a showroom that’s wonderful to visit, along with the ability to see where the clock makers perfect their craft. They have won the Black Forest Clock Association’s ‘Cuckoo Clock of the Year’ aware in 2004, 2007 and 2009 as well.
Locally Sourced Materials From the Black Forest in Germany
All wood used to make the clocks is from the Black Forest region in Germany, and when possible, metals from the region are selected as well. August Schwer aims to keep as many pieces and parts of the clocks they make sourced from the Black Forest region, further enhancing their authenticity and tradition. Scenery depicted in the designs of many of their clocks are inspired by country life in the region, bringing a little piece of the Black Forest into your home with each clock. Many of their Chalet-style cuckoo clocks feature old farmhouse designs depicting scenes from the German countryside from over a hundred years ago.
